Houston became the first American city to host the 2021 World Table Tennis Championships (“WTTC”) Finals. The event was hosted and supported by Harris County-Houston Sports Authority, who has been bringing world-class sporting events to Houston in recent years.
The WTTC took place at George R. Brown Convention Center from November 23 – 29., showcasing the world’s most talented players. There were 128 players in the Men and Women Singles and 64 pairs in each of the Doubles competitions.
This is the first time that the WTTC is hosted in the Americas and this year’s Championships also celebrated the 50th anniversary of Ping Pong Diplomacy. To mark the 50th anniversary of Ping Pong Diplomacy, two pairs of both American and Chinese players were formed to enter the Mixed Doubles competition, making history in the world of table tennis.
The WTTC ended with straight victories for the Chinese on November 29, with China’s world number one Fan Zhendong sweeping the Men’s Singles title for the fifth time when he played against Swedish finalist Truls Moregardh, and world number four Wang Manyu won her first Women’s Singles against compatriot world number two Sun Yingsha.
